Beach volleyball action began on Sunday at the Asian Games with nine men’s and eight women’s pool play matches.
The upset of the day happened in women’s Pool D as 2012 and 2016 Asian Games champions Varapatsorn Radarong/Tanarattha Udomchavee of Thailand fell to Kazakhstan’s Tatyana Mashkova/Irina Tsimbalova 18-21, 21-12, 15-11.
Radarong/Udomchavee competed in 12 FIVB World Tour events in 2018, finishing as high as fifth at the Haiyang Three Star (July 22), while Mashkova/Tsimbalova participated in just one world tour events together, finishing second at the Satun One Star (April 11).
Other World Tour competitors Fan Wang/Xinyi Xia and Xinxin Wang/Jinjin Zeng (China), Miki Ishii/Megumi Murakami (Japan) and Rumpaipruet Numwong/Khanittha Hongpak (Thailand) came through with victories.
Ishii/Murakami may be the most accomplished of the women’s teams, having posted a surprise fifth-place finish at the Gstaad Major (July 15) and earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Three Star.
Numwong/Hongpak finished third at the Satun One Star and earned top 10 placings at the Tokyo and Haiyang Three Star events. Wang/Zeng competed in two three star events together in 2018, finishing ninth in Haiyang and 17th in Tokyo.
On the men’s side, FIVB World Tour regulars Nuttanon Inkiew/Sedtawat Padsawud made quick work of their foes Mohamed Ahmed/Asfag Adam of the Maldives. Inkiew/Padsawud played in nine World Tour events, winning the Satun One Star and finishing third at the Langkawi One Star.
Ade Candra Rachmawan/Ashfiya Mohammad of Indonesia, who earned a silver (Satun One Star, April 11) and bronze (Singapore Two Star, June 24) on the FIVB stage in 2018, held Afghanistan’s Ozair Asifi/Mohib Ahmadi under 10 points in both sets of a 21-8, 21-7 sweep in Pool A.
China’s Peng Gao/Yang Li, who won the Singapore Two Star and finished third at the Jinjiang Two Star in 2018 among 12 FIVB World Tour entries, also won in straight sets, topping Taipei’s Chenwei Hsu/Shinshian Wu (21-11, 21-10).
Japan’s Yoshiumi Hasegawa/Keisuke Shimizu swept Ngoc Quy Nguyen/van Quoc Ly (Vietnam) 21-16, 21-17. Hasegawa/Shimizu competed in five FIVB events in 2018 after teaming up in May 1 at the Bangkok One Star.
