Three Polish Pairs Win in First Round of Hague Pool Play

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – The first matches of pool play have wrapped up at the DELA Beach Open, with nine of the top 10 seeds winning. The lone exception was No. 10 seed Christopher McHugh and Damien Schumann of Australia, who fell to No. 23 seed Christiaan Varenhorst and Jasper Bouter from the Netherlands.

Newly formed American duo Billy Allen and Ryan Doherty bested countrymen Bill Kolinske and Miles Evans in three sets: 17-21, 21-19, 15-10.

Allen/Doherty were one of two American pairs to win in the opening round of pool play, alongside new pair Casey Patterson and Stafford Slick, who bested Polish duo Kacper Kujawiak/Maciej Rudol in straight sets.

Three Polish pairs notched victories, while Latvia, Brazil, USA and the Netherlands each boasted two winning pairs.

All eight teams that advanced through qualifying lost their first match of pool play.

The second round of pool play commences early Friday morning.
