The USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships are underway. The 12 men’s teams have been divided into three pools, A through C. Only American citizens were eligible to play in the tournament. The event is part of the Team USA Summer Champions Series and will serve as a Team USA Trials, garnering a spot to the top men’s pair for a USA Volleyball collegiate beach national team.
The top two teams out of each men’s pool will advance, the highest of the third-place finishers (according to point ratio) will advance. A play-in match between the next two third-place finishers based on point ratio will determine the final single-elimination bracket spot.
The four teams in Pool B each played two matches on Day 1. UC Irvine’s duo of Dillon Hoffman and Reid Dominguez and UCLA’s Jackson Bantle and Hagen Smith went 2-0 to lead the group. Hoffman/Dominguez won in straight sets over Tyler Hedley and Vincent Pizzuti (Palomar College/Long Beach State) and edging Lewis College’s Matthew Yoshimoto and Jake Walenga 21-17, 18-21, 15-10.
Bantle/Smith swept their competition, topping Yashioto/Walenga and Hedley/Pizzuti.
Hoffman and Dominguez played for the UC Irvine indoor team which went 20-7 and advanced to the MPSF semifinals. UCLA went 17-10 and advanced to the MPSF quarterfinals. Lewis posted a 23-7 record and ended its season in the MIVA semifinals. Hoffman and Yoshimoto were honorable mention AVCA All-Americans.
