UCLA’s Bantle/Smith Held Foes Under 17 Points in Pool B Sweeps

USAV Collegiate Beach Championships

Day 2 of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships saw pool play wrap up for each of the three men’s pools, A through F. Of the 12 men’s teams, the top two teams out of each men’s pool will advance, the highest of the third-place finishers (according to point ratio) will advance. A play-in match between the next two third-place finishers based on point ratio will determine the final single-elimination bracket spot.

UCLA’s Jackson Bantle and Hagen Smith did not drop a single set or allow a foe more than 17 points in three Pool B victories. Bantle/Smith completed their sweep of the pool with a 21-14, 21-15 win over UC Irvine’s Dillon Hoffman and Reid Dominquez, which dropped to 2-1 in the competition but still earned a spot in the quarterfinals.

Lewis College’s Matthew Yoshimoto and Jake Walenga downed Tyler Hedley and Vincent Pizzuti (Palomar College/Long Beach State) 21-17, 23-21 to wrap up pool play.

Yoshimoto/Walenga advanced to a playoff match with the spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

Hoffman and Dominguez played for the UC Irvine indoor team which went 20-7 and advanced to the MPSF semifinals. UCLA went 17-10 and advanced to the MPSF quarterfinals. Lewis posted a 23-7 record and ended its season in the MIVA semifinals. Hoffman and Yoshimoto were honorable mention AVCA All-Americans.
