UCSD’s Tanner Syftestad Joins 1000 Kill Club vs. Stanford

UC San Diego senior opposite Tanner Syftestad became the sixth player in school history to notch 1,000 kills, doing so amidst a 17-putaway effort in a four-set loss to Stanford on Saturday.

Syftestad joins Jason Spangler (1,491 from 2007-10), Frank Fritsch (1,403 from 2007-10), Jim Waller (1,301 from 2001-04), Tom Black (1,268 from 1993-96) and Carl Eberts (1,044 fro 2009-13) as Tritons to reach the milestone.

The three-time team captain has downed 178 kills thus far in 2018, posting double-digit efforts in nine of the team’s 10 matches, including 20 or more putaways five times. He notched a season-high 27 kills against McKendree and vs. Ottawa (AZ). All told, the Sacramento, California, native has tallied 1,001 kills, including 46 double-digit kill efforts. He currently leads the nation in both points and kills per set.

Syftestad’s 2018 efforts earned him VolleyMob Player of the Week honors (Jan. 23) and two honorable mention nods (Jan. 9 and Jan. 30). The Tritons are currently 7-3 with matches against BYU and Concordia on the slate for Thursday and Friday.

In 2017, the second team All-MPSF and honorable mention All-America honoree tallied 366 kills (4.21 per set) at a .298 clip, while also adding a team-best 28 aces, 102 digs (1.17 per set) and 62 blocks (0.71 per set).

As a sophomore, Syftestad was second among the Tritons with 216 kills (2.84 per set) to go with 81 digs and 44 blocks.

As a rookie, the opposite notched 241 putaways (2.71 per set), while chipping in 112 digs (1.26 per set) and 75 blocks (0.84 per set).
