One of professional’s sports most impressive winning streaks came to an end as Sweden’s Volero Zurich took the court on October 15 against VC Kanti Schaffhausen for their 2017/18 Nationalliga A season opener. Sporting a 185-games domestic win streak, which started in January, 2012, Volero was upset 3-2 (24-26, 25-10, 19-25, 29-27, 16-14) to finally bring its historic run to a close.

Volero Zurich has dominated Swedish volleyball for the last years, as they have won the last eight Swiss Championships and Swiss Cups. However, a performance drop was expected to hit the club this year, as Volero’s general management decided to cut down on costs after the club’s many disappointing runs at the international level.  Even after fielding world-class rosters, and being consistently invited to participate in FIVB’s World Club Championships, Volero never finished higher than a bronze medal (2015, 2017) in the competition. Furthermore, it never finished CEV Champion’s League higher than its 4th place finish in 2007.

World class players, like Team USA player Foluke Akinradewo have left the club, which now will only field its rosters with promising young players like Gergana Dmitrova and Samara Almeida.
