The tournament hosts, Azerbaijan will take on Germany in their quarterfinal match at the 2017 CEV European Women’s Championships. Azerbaijan won their pool in the pool play phase of the tournament, giving them the automatic pass to the quarterfinals, while Germany had to play Bulgaria to advance.
The two teams have already faced each other in the competition, during pool play. Azerbaijan took down the German side in four sets and will look to keep that momentum going in the quarterfinal round.
Azerbaijan has been led by Polina Rahimova with 73 points so far, followed by Natalya Mammadova with 39 in the three matches played. The host team was an underdog in the competition, with not much expectations coming out of pool play, but they surprised everyone by running through their opponents.
German’s Louisa Lippmann ranks third overall in scoring during the final round with 87 points. Lippmann has been a strong fixture for the German team this summer, bringing that force with her to the European Championships. Jennifer Geerties will also be a big contributor for Germany in the quarterfinals as she has contributed 51 points in the teams four matches.
