#7 Lewis dropped the first game of the set 27-25 to #11 Ball State but took the next 3 to pull out the win on Friday February 17, 2017.

Lewis’ redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen had a match-high of 21 kills and hit .436 while redshirt sophomore Mitch Perinar totaled 15 kills and hit .294. Together Coenen and Perinar hit 69.2% of the team’s total 52 kills. Sophomore Setter Matt Yoshimoto had a match-high of 44 assists and 6 blocks while libero Michael Simmons had a match-high of 15 digs.

Ball State’s Brendan Durane had a team-high of 17 kills while Matt Szews hit a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs and also added 4 blocks in the match. Ball State had a total of 51 kills as a team but only hit .198 while Lewis had a total of 52 kills but hit .316.

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University’s duo of redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and redshirt sophomore opposite hitter Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) combined for 36 kills to lead the No. 7 Flyer men’s volleyball team to the 25-27, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association victory over No. 11 Ball State at Neil Carey Arena on Friday (Feb. 17) night.

Coenen finished with a match-high 21 kills and hit .436 (21 kills, 4 errors, 39 attacks), while Perinar recorded 15 putaways and hit .294 (15-5-34). Together, Coenen and Perinar (9 digs, 3 aces) accounted for 69.2% of Lewis’ 52 kills against the Cardinals.

With the win, Lewis improves to 10-3 on the campaign and 5-2 in MIVA action, while the Cardinals fall to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Lewis sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) dished out a match-high 44 assists and six blocks (1 solo), while redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) registered a match-high 15 digs.

Lewis senior middle blocker John Hodul (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit .636 (7-0-11) and added six block assists in the victory.

Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .316 (52-15-117) after being held to a .119 (14-9-42) performance in the opening set. The Flyers hit .426 (38-6-75) over the final three sets to secure the win. Ball State hit .198 (51-26-126) as a team.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 18), as the Flyers welcome Fort Wayne to Neil Carey Arena for a 7 PM first serve.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.–The No. 11 Ball State men’s volleyball team fell short to MIVA rival Lewis Friday night, 3-1.

The Cardinals started off the night strong and took the opening set, 27-25. The teams were tied 25-25 before Matt Szews and Brendan Surane each knocked down a kill to seal the set one victory. As a team, Ball State tallied 13 kills and 10 block assists.

In set two, both teams knocked down 13 kills, but the Flyers’ .379 hitting percentage led them to a 25-21 win. Both Szews and Surane had a team high four kills in the second set.

Lewis boasted an impressive .458 hitting percentage in the third set and took the set 25-17. The Cardinals were able to knock down 14 kills, five by Szews and five by Surane.

In the closing set, Ball State and Lewis were tied 11-11 before the Flyers scored six straight points. Surane led the way with four kills while freshman Blake Reardon added three.

Surane finished the night with a team high 17 kills along with six digs and three block assists. Szews tallied 14 kills and led the team with his 10 digs. Szews also added three block assists and one solo block. Senior Connor Gross had 44 assists in the contest. The Cardinals knocked down 51 kills, 45 digs and 13 block assists.

The Cardinals (11-3, 3-2 MIVA) will be in action again tomorrow (Feb. 18) when they look to take down No. 10 Loyola-Chicago. Match is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
