- May 2-6, 2018
- Schedule/Results
Friday brought the end of pool play and the first round of main draw action at the Mersin Three-Star and set up the Round of 16 field.
One major upset of the day saw Thai duo Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee take on top seeded Mariafe Artacho del Solar/Taliqua Clancy of Australia and come away with a 23-21, 15-21, 16-14 win to knock the Aussies out of the competition in Round 1.
“That was a tough match because they are a good team,” Radarong said. “We felt good out there and we stuck together all the way through, but we are learning by being on the World Tour together.”

Also vying for a survival on elimination day was No. 4 seed Marleen van Iersel/Joy Stubbe of the Netherlands, who faced off with Czech duo Martina Bonnerova/Sarka Nakladova in the final match of pool play. The Dutch prevailed in straight sets and also won their Round 1 match to advance.
Women’s Round 2 action is set to begin at 2 a.m. ET Saturday.
On the men’s side, Mohammad Ashfiya/Ade Rachmawan made a splash in their first effort of the 2018 FIVB season, downing Germany’s Alexander Walkenhorst/Sven Winter 19-21, 21-18, 15-13.
“It was a good match and an incredible result because the Germans are a good team and it is the first time that we have beaten a team like that,” Ashfiya said. “At the end we were thinking about maintaining our belief and staying calm to keep going.”
Also facing win or go home situations were third seeded Diaz Nivaldo/Sergio Gonzalez of Cuba and Turkey’s Hasan Mermer/Safa Urlu. The Cubans finished pool play with a straight-set win over Finnish pair Jyrki Nurminen/Santeri Siren, while Mermer/Urlu ousted Frenchmen Maxime Thiercy/Arnaud Gauthier-Rat to stay alive. Both pairs also won three-set affairs in Round 1 to advance to Saturday’s Round of 16.
Men’s Round 2 action is set to begin at 4 a.m. ET Saturday.
