FORT LAUDERDALE MAJOR

After beginning the tournament in the qualifying rounds, new duo Taiana Lima/Carol Horta of Brazil have claimed a spot in the Fort Lauderdale Major semifinals.

Horta finished atop the podium at the Monaco One Star in June 2017 with Juliana after previously pairing with Maria Antonelli for a fourth-place finish at the Xiamen Three Star in April.

Lima’s previous best FIVB World Tour finish was a fifth-place effort at the Gstaad Five-Star in July 2017 with Elize Maia.

No. 9 Barbara Seixas De Freitas/Fernanda Alves will join their countrywomen in the semis after knocking out No. 4 seed Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova (Czech Republic).

Germans Victoria Bieneck/Isabel Schneider kept the Brazilians from having a chance at a podium sweep, taking out No. 10 seed Agatha Bednarczuk/Eduarda “Duda” Santos Lisboa.

No. 13 seed Brooke Sweat/Summer Ross were the lone remaining American team in the quarterfinals after taking out countrywomen Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes in round 2 and kept their winning streak going with a straight set victory over No. 2 seed Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan from Canada.

No. 1 overall seed Lauren Fendrick and Nicole Branaugh ran into a buzzsaw in Agatha/Duda.

Somehow the Brazilians were able to avoid any head to head meetings throughout the main draw.

Germans Karla Borger/Margareta Kozuch (No. 21) rounded out the top eight. Only four of the Top 10 seeds made it through to the quarterfinals.

Lima/Horta will face Schneider/Bieneck in the first semifinal on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. ET, while Barbara/Fernanda and Summer/Sweat face off at 11:15.
