The final eight matches of pool play took place on Thursday morning and those eight winners immediately turned around to play in the Main Draw first round with spots in the Round of 16 on the line.

Americans Brooke Sweat and Summer Ross, the No. 13 seed, upset No. 5 seed Maria Antonelli and Carolina Solberg in three sets to move on. Unfortunately, the win sets up a Friday meeting with fellow Americans Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, who won Pool F.

Canadian duos Heather Bansley/Brandie Wilkerson and Taylor Pischke/Jamie Lynn Broder  and Brazilians Agatha Bednarczuk / Eduarda “Duda” Santos Lisboa and Taiana Lima/Carol Horta (Brazil) moved on. Isabel Scheider/Victoria Bieneck (Germany), Nadezda Makroguzova/Svetlana Kholomina (Russia) and Fan Wang/Xinyi Xia (China) also earned spots in Friday’s Round of 16.

The field of 16 includes three Brazilian pairs, three Americans, three Canadians and three Germans. Teams from Russia, China and Australia also remain in the race for the podium.

In addition to the American meetup, Germans Scheider/Bieneck will face countrywomen Kim Behrens/ Sandra Ittlinger on Friday. The Canadian and Brazilian duos have avoided each other until at least the quarterfinals.

Agatha/Duda are the lone remaining medalist from the 2017 Fort Lauderdale event as gold medalists Larissa/Talita of Brazil are out due to Talita’s pregnancy and No. 3 seed and defending bronze medalists Julia Sude/Chantal Laboureur (Germany) were knocked out on Thursday.

Only four of the Top 10 seeds remain in the competition.

In other results, Americans Brittany Hochevar/Emily Day and April Ross/Alix Klineman were knocked out of the competition with straight-set losses.
