There is no denying that the CEV Champion League is by far the premier club competition in the volleyball world. This is true mostly due to CEV‘s impressive organizational efforts related to the tournament, like the recently held forum in Luxembourg aimed to improve the competition which was attended by more than 90 delegates, the FIVB included.

During the forum, one of the issues that popped up was the possibility brough up by the CEV‘s European Cups Commission chairman Roman Stanislavov of having a fixed host for the competition’s Final 4 (Championat.com):

“The CEV Forum was held in the format of an open meeting. All participants expressed their views on how to improve the Champions League in the future. Global changes that can be introduced already at the next edition are not expected. The format remains the same. I see no reason to be different. However, CEV has long discussed the proposal to hold the Champions League final in one city for several years, as it is practiced in European handball. In handball, the finals are recently taken by Cologne. Perhaps it is convenient – the final in one place and at the same date every year. This would require a good financial and organizational proposal. If there is a specific proposal from a city or club, why not implement such an idea?”

tanislavov did no specify what CEV and participating teams would win from such an arrangement, although it could be inferred that such a change could be a nice solution amid the financial crises most sporting federations are currently facing. Will it pan out? This year the event will be hosted by Bucharest (women’s) and Kazan (Men’s).
