Dowdy/Pollock Upset Top Women’s Seed in AVP Austin Open Main Draw

No. 9 seeded Amanda Dowdy and Irene Pollock pulled the upset, taking down No. 1 seed and Huntington Beach Open runnerup Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen in three sets in the second round on Friday. Dowdy/Pollock edged out the top seed 21-12, 14-21, 15-9 to move on.

The rest of the top four seeds advanced as No. 2 Whitney Pavlik and April Ross, No. 3 Kim DiCello and Emily Stockman and No. 4 Angela Bensend and Geena Urango each won a pair of matches.

In the contender’s bracket, No. 13 Aurora Davis and Bree Scarbrough, No. 14 Kimberly Smith and Xi Zhang and No. 15 Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler moved through the first round after making their way through the qualifying round.

The top four seeds advanced in the men’s main draw. Top seeded Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, who won last week’s Huntington Beach Open title, made quick work of No. 16 seed Piotr Marciniak and Raffe Paulis (21-13, 21-16) and No. 9 Derek Olson and Curt Toppel (21-11, 21-12). No. 2 Trevor Crabb and Sean Rosenthal, No. 3 Billy Allen and Stafford Slick and No. 4 Jeremy Casebeer and John Mayer also moved forward with a pair of straight set wins.

In the contender’s bracket, No. 13 seed Maddison McKibbin and Reid Priddy topped No. 5 Ty Loomis and Ty Tramblie to stay in contention. The pair fell to Casebeer/Mayer in the opening round of the main draw.

Action continues throughout the day on Saturday.
