Brazil’s Andre Loyola Stein and Evandro Gonçalves Oliveira Júnior battled against the Latvian team of Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins to win a spot in the semifinals. While the Brazilians were able to prevail in two sets, the close scores belie the intensity of the match. In the first set, the Brazilians needed to push Latvia into overtime, winning 24-22. For the second set, Andre/Evandro were able to shut out Samoilovs/Smedins with a score of 21-19.
In their bid for a semifinal spot, the Brazilians aggressively attacked Samoilovs with their serves sending 34/35 his way. The strategy paid off as Evandro was able to score 3 aces off of Samoilovs. On the Latvian side of the court, they targeted Andre with the majority of the serves with him taking 74%.
Despite Andre receiving most of the serves, the Brazilians were able to evenly spread the offense between them. Evandro was the more efficient of the two, scoring 15 points on 21 swings. Andre scored more points with 17 on 29 swings, but committed 5 errors as well. Even though he committed more errors than his Evandro, Andre made up for it with 3 blocks.
Evandro/Andre will be facing off in the semifinals against Canada’s Schalk/Saxton.
