2018 FIVB CHALLENGER CUP ESSENTIALS
- Six teams will participate in the 2018 FIVB Challenger Cup, with competition running from June 20th-24th
- Portugal qualified because they are hosting the event this year (all matches will be in Matosinos, a city just north of Porto)
- Four teams qualified by winning their representative regions: Chile (South American representative), Kazakhstan (Asian representative), Cuba (NORCECA)
- The fifth and sixth qualifiers are Croatia and the Czech Republic, the winner and runner-up of the Golden European League
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
As the 16 teams competing in the inaugural Volleyball Nations League (#VNL) continue to grab most of the headlines, another tournament starts June 20th that will impact next year’s #VNL competition. The 2018 FIVB Challenger Cup will feature six national teams competing for a spot in the 2019 #VNL.
Here’s how it works:
- At the beginning of this year’s #VNL competition, 12 teams were identified as core teams with no risk of relegation: Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Japan, Poland, Russia, Serbia and USA
- Another four 2018 #VNL teams were dubbed “challenger” teams: Australia, Bulgaria, Canada and South Korea
- Whichever team finishes last among these four will be replaced in the 2019 #VNL by the winner of the 2018 FIVB Challenger Cup in Matosinos, Portugal
