Pepperdine Joins AVCA Top 5 Behind LBSU, BYU, UCLA, UC Irvine

Long Beach State, BYU, UCLA and UC Irvine are among the AVCA Top 5 for the fourth straight week.

The 49ers and Cougars held down the top two spots for the second straight week. For its part, LBSU bested UC Santa Barbara twice to move to 19-0. BYU downed USC in four sets on Thursday to keep its position.

UCLA moved up to No. 3 with a home sweep of Concordia Irvine and a four-setter over Grand Canyon.

UC Irvine bumped up to No. 4 with a 3-0 showing, posting a sweep of George Mason on Tuesday and besting UC San Diego twice, winning 3-0 on Wednesday and surviving a five-setter on the road on Saturday.

Last week’s No. 3, Hawaii, was the week’s biggest mover, dropping four spots to No. 7 with two losses to then No. 10 Cal State Northridge and one to No. 7 Pepperdine.

With the win, the Waves moved into the Top 5. For its victories, CSUN climbed two spots to No. 8.

Lewis dropped two spots to No. 10 with a Saturday loss to instate foe Loyola.

This week’s slate pits No. 4 UC Irvine against USC, while Long Beach State, BYU and UCLA have byes.

Loyola, which boasts the lead in the MIVA, has two top 15 battles on tap, facing Ball State and Fort Wayne.
