It is safe to say that, at least from an outside perspective, that Poland had two different stages at this year’s WCH: one before its matches against Argentina and France, and one after. Argentina’s match was brutally hard for the team, as it lost at the tie break to a lower-tier team after being up 14-11 in a game marked by refereeing controversies and provocation outbursts by both teams. All the while, Vital Heynen was accused by opponents of behaving in such a way detrimental to the game, questioning the refs at every call.
Regardless if said accusations were true or not, the Polish media has now made known to us that after the game against France, a group of Polish players met with coach Heynen to talk about their behavior going forward in the match:
“The news is that the team met, the gentlemen talked, and they won the coach over: for the good of the team he changed his behavior, calmed down, and the Reds crushed their rivals. The guy who during the match with Argentina started fights at every opportunity and was ready to throw himself into his opponents’ throats, in the decisive matches of the tournament he was gentle like a lamb, he was calm, and changed his skin” – Przegląd Sportowy’s Kamil Drąg
Good coaches listen to their players and are adaptable to new ideais when they need to be. Heynen is such a coach, he trusts his players and is not afraid to consider their opinions:
“If I did not trust my players, there would be no team. I trust one hundred percent of each of my fourteen players. I will follow them into the fire and it works both ways. They also have no problem with coming to me and talking about any topic. They are like my children to me.”
