There are many ways to dig a volleyball, but using your face is probably the worst of them, although it makes for amazing highlights. If you are at the receiving end of a Paola Egonu attack then, one of the strongest hitters in the world, things get even nastier. This is exactly what happened to Russian setter Evgenya Startseva during her team’s game against Italy. You can clearly see in the video below that after the nasty hit, Startseva wobbles back to her feet looking for the truck that hit her. The fact that the game’s DJ chose to play “Here comes the boom” during the hailstorm must have hurt for the player as well. To add insult to injury, the Italian team handed Russia a 3-1 loss, with Egonu bringing home 29 points.
Sadly, the hit landed Startseva a hospital visit:
“Startseva feels fine, but according to the rules we hand to send her to a medical facility. There she will undergo all the necessary examinations, after which it will be clear what’s next.” – Team manager Andrei Yerkhov
Fortunately, everything turned out alright for Russia’s captain and she will be ready for the team’s game against China:
“Friends, thank you very much for the words of support! Now I feel good and look forward to tomorrow’s match. We are waiting for a very important game against the Chinese team, a battle to advance to the next round! Now we need your faith and support, and we will leave all our strength on the court, I promise you.””
