Just three of the 16 women’s main draw matches went the distance on Thursday with Latvia’s Anastasija Kravcenoka/Tina Graudina and Americans Emily Stockman/Kelley Larsen and Betsi Flint/Emily Day coming out victorious.
Nine of the top 10 seeds won their Day 1 match, all save ninth-seeded Americans Sarah Sponcil/Kelly Claes, which fell to Brazil’s Maria Clara Salgado Solberg/Elize Maia 21-19, 21-18.
Sponcil/Claes were not the only newly formed American duo to stumble in their tournament opener. P1440 founder and three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and new partner Brooke Sweat fell to No. 15 seed Dutch duo Joy Stubbe/Marleen van Iersel (21-16, 21-14).
“We did some good stuff out there,” Sweat said after the defeat. “I need to clear up my passing a little bit, but there were some positives, so we need to go back and pick a little bit more and figure things out for tomorrow. We’re a new team, so we’ll have to figure things out as we go. It’s a long process, with a lot of learning and I’m looking forward to it. I know it’s going to take time, but it’s all going to happen.”
Of the six American pairs in the main draw, three were victorious with top seeded Summer Ross/Sara Hughes handling China’s MeiMei Lin/Zhu Lingdi in Pool A.
Of the five Brazilian teams in action, four picked up wins, with the fifth, Taiana Silva Bigi/Victoria Lopes Pereira, falling at the hands of countrywomen and fellow qualifiers Maria Antonelli/Carol Solberg Salgado (21-13, 21-15).
Of the eight qualifying teams, just three won their main draw opener – Ana Patricia/Rebecca, Maria Clara/Elize Maia and Flint/Day.
