Sweeps Abound In World League Pool C1

Editor’s Note: While teams are divided into 4-team pools for pragmatic reasons on each of the 3 weekends of the tournament, each teams’ record goes into a single table to determine who advances to the knockout stages. The pool standings presented here are to help keep up with each pool only, and on each day of the tournament, we will post a summary that includes the full table as well.

France swept Bulgaria 3-0 and Russia pulled the same feat against Argentina, as the top two teams in Pool C1 flexed their muscle on day 1.

France def. Bulgaria 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-22)

France’s powerful offense roared past Bulgaria on day 1, though Bulgaria kept the first and last sets close. Julien Lyneel led all players with 11 points, and his French teammate Trevor Clevenot was right behind with 10. Bulgaria’s Tsvetan Sokolov notched 10 himself to lead his team.

Bulgaria outblocked France 13-9, getting 3 apiece from Viktor Yosifov and Nikolay Nikolov. France was led by 4 from Kevin LeRoux.

Russia def. Argentina 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-19)

Russia was even more dominant, getting a whopping 18 points from Maxim Zhigalov to blow out Argentina.

Egor Kliuka added 11 points of his own as Russia crushed Argentina in spikes (35-31), blocks (12-2) and service aces (8-1).

For Argentina, Gonzalo Quiroga chipped in a dozen points , but no one else had more than 6.

 

Tomorrow, Russia and France meet to determine the top of the pool standings. Meanwhile Argentina and Bulgaria will play the other pool C1 match.
