The men played just one round of qualifying matches at the Vienna Major on Tuesday with the action set to wrap up on Wednesday. Round 2 will feature an all-American pairing and an all-Swiss matchup among eight contests.
Americans Betsi Flint/Emily Day picked up five wins en route to the Haiyang Three Star title, while Caitin Ledoux/Sarah Sponcil earned the bronze. Austrians Robin Seidl went 6-0 on the way to the mens gold, topping Brazilians George/Thiago in the final.
The race for the Haiyang Three Star gold is down to four teams per gender, with three American women’s duos and two Brazilian men’s pairings remaining. Live streaming of the matches is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET
No. 2 Emily Stockman/Kelley Larsen, No. 3 Betsi Flint/Emily Day and No. 24 Caitlin Ledoux/Sarah Sponcil picked up a pair of victories on Saturday to earn a spot in the Haiyang semifinals beginning at 9 p.m. ET. On the men’s side, two Brazilian pairs are among the final four.
Friday brought pool play to an end at the Haiyang Three Star and also included the first elimination round, setting the table for Saturday’s Round of 16.
Forty one men’s teams and 31 women’s teams will vie for the FIVB Haiyang titles this week, including Americans Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick, Emily Stockman/Kelley Larsen and Betsi Flint/Emily Day.
The top two seeds of the Gstaad Major on the men’s side are out of the competition in a historic occurrence as both failed to win a match during the pool play stage.
The opening round of pool play at the Gstaad Major was ripe with upsets as four of the top eight seeds fell. Meanwhile, eight teams went on to earn pool titles, including Americans Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb.
After 23 qualifying matches on Tuesday, the men’s main draw field for the Gstaad Five Star is complete with eight teams from seven countries joining the field. Italy advanced two teams through the qualifiers.
After pulling out of their final two AVP San Francisco matches last weekend due to a rumored injury, Americans Kelley Larsen/Emily Stockman seem to have returned to form winning a pair of country quota matches on Monday and one qualification match on Tuesday to claim a spot in the Gstaad Major main draw.
