Top Seeds Fendrick/Ross, Day Hochevar On To Manhattan Beach Quarters

AVP Manhattan Beach Open

Top seeded Lauren Fendrick and April Ross and No. 2 seed Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar are on to the quarterfinals after registering a trio of victories on Day 1 of the main draw in Manhattan Beach.

Fendrick/Ross cruised through No. 32 Juliana Friederich and Danielle Jacobson (21-11, 21-11) and No. 16 seed Lara Dykstra and Jace Pardon (21-15, 21-12), then fought through for a three-set comeback victory over No. 8 Lane Carico and Alix Klineman (19-21, 21-18, 15-12).

Day/Hochevar made quick work of No. 31 Majo Orellana and Summer Nash (21-10, 21-12) and No. 15 Nicole Branagh and Brandie Wilkerson (21-17, 21-8) before edging No. 10 Caitlin Ledoux and Maria Salgado 18-21, 21-18, 15-10 to move on.

No. 5 Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat earned their spot in the quarterfinals with three straight set wins, topping the No. 28, No. 21 and No. 13 seeds.

Also on to the fourth round are No. 6 seeded Kim DiCello and Emily Stockman, who downed No. 27 and No. 22 before squeaking past No. 3 Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen 21-16, 14-21, 16-14.

Still fighting on the contender’s side of the bracket are No. 23 seeded Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, who upset No. 9 Karolina Marciniak and Kendra Van Zwieten (21-18, 21-16) after falling to Ledoux/Salgado (21-19, 21-19) and defeating No. 26 Stacy Howell and Nicole Sherpensky (21-13, 21-17).

Howard and Quiggle also are still alive after downing No. 12 Sheila Shaw and Cici Zhang 21-18, 20-22, 18-16.
