After the first day of main draw action, four men’s teams and four women’s are undefeated atop the winner’s bracket heading into Saturday, including No. 8 Brittany Howard/Kelly Reeves and No. 7 Tim Bomgren/Chaim Schalk.
In a stacked qualifying pool, only four teams per gender advanced through Thursday’s matches into the main draw. Seeds 2, 3, 5 and 9 made it through on the women’s side, while No. 1 qualifier Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan were knocked out. On the men’s side, seeds 1, 2, 4 and 6 advanced, including top seed Ty Loomis/Piotr Marciniak.
The AVP kicked off its 2018 tour season with the first two rounds and first round of contender action on Friday at the Austin Open. Top seeds Dalhausser/Lucena and Ross/Klineman are through to the third round, but several surprise faces are joining them after a day of upsets.
Amidst a rain storm, pool play action got underway at the Lucerne Three-Star on Thursday. Six American pairs are through to the knockout phase with one more vying for the round on Friday. Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Tina Graudina also is moving on, competing for her native Latvia.
Eight men’s and eight women’s pairs fought through two qualifying rounds to earn berths to the Lucerne Three-Star 32-team main draw on Wednesday. Among those moving on were Americans Lane Carico/Lara Dykstra and Chase Budinger/Sean Rosenthal.
The jam packed FIVB slate continues this week with three titles on the line: the Tuan Chau Island One-Star, the Bangkok One-Star and the Lucerne Three-Star.
Americans Bill Kolinske and Miles Evans moved on to Saturday’s semifinals with a straight set win over Australia’s Paul Burnett and Joshua Court (21-14, 21-12).
