After two rounds of pool play, the Round of 12 berths at the Oman One-Star were decided on Thursday with two Iranian teams making it through to the quarterfinals.
The four pool winners – Rahman Raoufi/Haman Salemiinjehboroun (Iran), Philipp Arne Bergmann/Yannick Harms (Germany) and qualifiers Aghamohammad Salagh/Abolhamed Mirzaali (Iran) and Tiziano Andreatta/Andrea Abbiati (Italy) – earn automatic berths to the quarterfinals, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Raoufi/Salemi are the No. 1 seed in the tournament, while Bergmann/Harms are No. 2, Andreatta/Abiati are No. 5 and Salagh/Mirzaali are No. 11.
By making the quarters, Andreatta/Abbiati are guaranteed their best FIVB finish, ahead of two ninth-place showings. Salagh/Mirzaali also are off to their best ever FIVB effort, ahead of a 17th place finish at the 2017 Kish Island Three Star.
Only three of the 16 pool play matches went to tiebreak, with two coming in Pool C and seeing Salagh/Mirzaali claim victory.
The remaining eight teams will face off beginning at 1 a.m. ET on Friday for spots in the quarterfinals.
Rounding out the Top 12 are two teams from Switzerland as well as one each from Iran, Czech Republic, Oman, Hong Kong, Austria and Denmark.
