Upsets Abound on Day 1 of AVP Austin Open

The AVP kicked off its 2018 tour season with the first two rounds and first round of contender action on Friday at the Austin Open.

Top seeded Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena, No. 3 Billy Allen/Ryan Doherty, No. 4 John Mayer/Trevor Crabb and No. 7 Jeremy Casebeer/Reid Priddy are through to the third round of the AVP Austin Open after recording a pair of victories on Friday.

Casebeer/Priddy upset No. 2 seed John Hyden/Theo Brunner in the second round via tiebreak 21-18, 16-21, 15-11.

Three of the four Round 2 matches were decided in tiebreak, save Dalhausser/Lucena’s straight set win over Ed Ratledge/Eric Zaun (21-16, 21-13).

On the women’s side, top seeded Alix Klineman/April Ross, No. 7 Lauren Fendrick/Sarah Sponcil, No. 13 seed Sarah Day/Nicolette Martin and No. 14 seed Janelle Allen/Kerri Schuh advanced to the third round. Day/Martin and Allen/Schuh started the tournament in Thursday’s qualifiers.

Klineman/Ross and Fendrick/Sponcil each won a pair of straight set affairs. Sponcil, who is fresh off her senior beach season at UCLA and making her AVP debut, and Fendrick, an Olympian, teamed up to defeat No. 2 seed Caitlin Ledoux/Kendra VanZwieten in the second round.

Allen/Schuh upset No. 3 seed Ali Mccolloch/Geena Urango 21-14, 16-21, 16-14 in the opening round and then topped No. 7 Lara Dykstra/Sheila Shaw 21-17,  23-21 to move on.

Day/Martin took out No. 4 Amanda Dowdy/Irene Pollock 21-12, 15-21, 15-11 in the first round and moved past No. 12 Aurora Davis/Bree Scarbrough 21-15, 21-14 in Round 2.

Six of the eight first round matches went to tiebreak.
