After tough semifinal losses, the United States will meet NORCECA foe Canada for a shot at third-place and a spot on the podium. The two teams met earlier in this year’s World League, as Canada came back from 2-1 down to win in five sets over the U.S. Bradley Robert Gunter led Canada with 17 points while Ben Patch matched his 17 for Team USA.
The U.S. got to this point after going 4-5 in the group stage and squeaking in as the six seed. They split their Final Six matches before falling in four sets yesterday to the home team in Brazil. Overall, their record in the event stands at 5-7. They will be attempting to finish on the podium in World League for the sixth time. Taylor Sander currently is tied among the competition for most points in the final stage (56).
Canada finished the group stage one spot ahead of USA at 5-4 and the five seed. They also recorded one win and one loss in the Final Six before dropping the match against France in four sets yesterday. The Canadian side is already guaranteed their best finish in the event, as it was previously fifth-place (2013). Not to be confused with Sander of Team USA, Canada has Tyler Sanders who leads all setters in assists per set during the finals (7.1).
Canada has won the last two matches in international competition. Besides their World League victory earlier this year, they also took down USA in straight sets in the Olympic pool phase.
