With only two matches left in the second round in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, there are four teams in each pool left that have a chance at the third round. Serbia in Pool E, who have not lost a set all tournament, booked their tickets to the third round with Brazil’s five set loss to Germany on Sunday, combined with Serbia’s 3-0 win over Germany on Monday. Pool E still have the Netherlands, Japan and Brazil fighting for the other two spots in that pool. As for Pool F, Italy, the USA, China and Russia are remaining for the three spots there.
We will now go through the scenarios for Wednesday, October 10th matches in each pool:
POOL E
Serbia (7-0, 21 points) HAS already clinched their berth in the third round and CAN clinch first place with:
- WIN vs. Japan IN <5 SETS
- AND Netherlands LOSS vs. Brazil IN <5 SETS
- Serbia reaches 8 wins and 24 points, no team can match on points
- OR WIN vs. Japan IN 5 SETS
- AND Netherlands LOSS vs. Brazil IN <5 SETS
- Serbia reaches 8 wins and 23 points, Netherlands can tie on wins and points, but Serbia would take sets ratio tiebreaker (4.800 to 4.167 (best if tied on wins and points)).
Netherlands (7-0, 20 points) CAN clinch their berth in the third round with:
- WIN vs. Brazil
- Netherlands reaches 8 wins and Brazil cannot match (Serbia vs. Japan result does not matter)
- OR Japan LOSS vs. Serbia
- Netherlands would already be at 7 wins, winner of Japan vs. Brazil on Thursday would be at 7 wins, loser would be at 6 wins
Japan (6-1, 18 points) CAN clinch their berth in the third round with:
- WIN vs. Serbia
- AND Brazil LOSS vs. Netherlands IN <5 SETS
- Japan reaches 7 wins, Brazil could only reach 6 wins (maximum)
Brazil cannot clinch a berth on Wednesday.
POOL F
Italy (7-0, 21 points) CAN clinch their berth in the third round with:
- WIN vs. Russia
- Italy reaches 8 wins, Russia can only reach 7 wins (maximum)
- OR WIN 2 SETS vs. Russia
- AND CHINA LOSS vs. USA IN <5 SETS
- Italy reaches 7 wins and 22 points, China can only reach at most 7 wins and 21 points
- OR WIN 2 SETS vs. Russia
- AND USA LOSS vs. China IN <5 SETS
- Italy reaches 7 wins and 22 points, USA can only reach at most 7 wins and 22 points, but Italy will take the set ratio tiebreaker (3.286 to 2.273 (best if tied on wins and points)).
USA (7-0, 20 points) CAN clinch their berth in the third round with:
- WIN vs. China
- USA reaches 8 wins, China can only reach 7 wins (maximum)
China and Russia cannot clinch a berth on Wednesday.
