Women’s World Championship Scenarios for the Final Day of First Round

With one match remaining in the first round of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, 12 teams have clinched their spots in the second round. Japan, Germany, Turkey, Thailand, Azerbaijan and Brazil were added to the list on Wednesday that already included the Netherlands, Russia, Serbia and the USA. Turkey qualified as Canada cannot match Turkey’s sets ratio if tied on wins and points. Four spots remain, one in Pool A, one in Pool B, and two in Pool D. Additionally all of the pools are still open for first place, so we’ll go through the scenarios for winning the pool and making the second round in this article.

Pool A

Netherlands (4-0, 11 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. Mexico
  • Netherlands reaches 5-0, no team can match
  • OR LOSE IN 5 SETS AND Germany WIN vs. Japan IN 5 SETS
  • Netherlands at 4 wins and 12 points, Germany at 4 wins and 11 points

Japan (3-1, 10 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. Germany IN 3/4 SETS OR WIN IN 5 SETS
  • AND Netherlands LOSS IN 3/4 SETS OR LOSS IN 5 SETS
  • If Netherlands lose in <5 sets, a Japan win would put them ahead on points
  • Japan will have sets ratio tiebreaker over Netherlands if tied on wins and points

Germany (3-1, 9 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. Japan
  • AND Netherlands LOSS IN 3/4 SETS OR LOSS IN 5 SETS
  • If Netherlands lose in <5 sets, a Germany win would put them ahead on points
  • Germany will have sets ratio tiebreaker over Netherlands if tied on wins and points

Mexico (1-3, 3 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • WIN vs. Netherlands IN 3/4 SETS
  • OR WIN vs. Netherlands IN 5 SETS AND Cameroon WIN IN 5 SETS
  • Mexico will have sets ratio tiebreaker if tied on wins and points
  • OR Cameroon LOSS vs. Argentina

Cameroon (1-3, 3 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • WIN vs. Argentina IN 3/4 SETS
  • AND Mexico WIN vs. Netherlands IN 5 SETS
  • OR WIN vs. Argentina
  • AND Mexico LOSS vs. Netherlands

Argentina have been eliminated

Pool B

Italy (4-0, 12 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. China

China (4-0, 12 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. Italy

Turkey (2-2, 6 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round

Bulgaria (1-3, 3 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • WIN vs. Canada

Canada (1-3, 3 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • WIN vs. Bulgaria

Cuba have been eliminated

Pool C

Russia (4-0, 11 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. USA

USA (4-0, 11 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN vs. Russia

Thailand (2-2, 7 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round

Azerbaijan (2-2, 6 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round

South Korea and Trinidad & Tobago have been eliminated

Pool D

Serbia (4-0, 12 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • 1 SET WIN vs. Puerto Rico
  • Serbia will have sets ratio over Brazil (4.333 to 4.000 (max)) if tied on 4 wins and 12 points
  • OR the point difference combined with Brazil’s 3-0 win and Serbia’s 0-3 loss is <33 points (say Brazil 75-58 (+17), Serbia 60-75 (-15)=32)
  • If tied on wins, points, sets ratio (with BRA 3-0 & SRB 0-3, 4.000 for both) and points ratio, Serbia would win head-to-head tiebreaker

Brazil (3-1, 9 points) HAVE already clinched their berth in the second round, and can win the pool with

  • WIN IN 3 SETS
  • AND Serbia LOSS IN 3 SETS vs. Puerto Rico
  • AND the point difference combined with Brazil’s win and Serbia’s loss is >33 points (say Brazil 75-57 (+18), Serbia 59-75 (-16)=34)
  • Brazil would tie on 4 wins, 12 points, 4.000 sets ratio, and points ratio would be the deciding factor

Dominican Republic (2-2, 6 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • 1 SET WIN vs. Kenya
  • Dominican Republic will have sets ratio over Kenya (0.778 to 0.667 (max)) if tied on 2 wins and 6 points
  • OR LOSS vs. Kenya 0-3 AND point difference is <44 points (75-32, example)

Puerto Rico (2-2, 6 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • 1 SET WIN vs. Serbia
  • Puerto Rico will have sets ratio over Kenya (0.778 to 0.667 (max)) if tied on 2 wins and 6 points
  • OR 1 SET WIN for Dominican Republic vs. Kenya
  • Puerto Rico will have sets ratio over Kenya (0.667 (worst) to 0.600 (best 3-1)) if tied on 2 wins and 6 points
  • OR 0-3 LOSS vs. Serbia AND Dominican Republic LOSS vs. Kenya 0-3 AND point difference is <37 points (75-39, example)

Kenya (1-3, 3 points) CAN clinch their berth in the second round with

  • 3-0 WIN vs. Dominican Republic
  • AND Puerto Rico 0-3 LOSS vs. Serbia
  • AND point difference is >36 points (75-38, example)
  • OR 3-0 WIN vs. Dominican Republic
  • AND point difference is >43 points (75-31, example)
  • Kenya and Dominican Republic would tie on wins, points, sets ratio and points ratio
  • The last tiebreaker is round robin head-to-head, which Kenya would have won on the last day of the first round

Kazakhstan have been eliminated
