10 Teams Clinch Spots in Rounds of 32 On Day 3 (Men’s Standings)

2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

The first handful of teams who have clinched their spot in the bracket of 32 are trickling in after 3 days of play at the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.

Specifically the #2 seed in the tournament Smedins/Samoilovs of Latvia, via their win over Germany and Qatar’s corresponding win over Venezuela on Sunday, have booked their tickets through.

Only pools where there are two 2-0 teams so far have clinching spots. That’s the case in 5 of the 12 pools on the men’s side – owed to the relatively-few upsets so far.

It could have been true in a 6th pool, Pool D, but there was a minor upset on Saturday where Dutch pair Varenhorst/Van Garderen, seeded 45th, upset Mexican pair Virgen/Ontiveros, seeded 21st.

If one of those teams loses and one of those teams wins on Tuesday, when they next play, the winning side will advance. That seems the most likely scenario with Virgen/Ontiveros having to face #4 seed Evandro/Andre, while the Dutch play bottom-of-the-table Quesada/Pina of Cuba, who haven’t won a set in two matches at the tournament. Even if that’s the outcome, Virgen and Ontiveros will still have a chance as either one of the top-placing 3rd-place teams, or out of the lucky losers bracket, where they’d be favored.

Teams Clinching Advancing to the round of 32:

  • #2 Smedins/Samoilovs, Latvia
  • #23 Jefferson/Cherif, Qatar
  • #6 Krasilnikov/Liamin, Russia
  • #19 Koekelkoren/van Walle, Belgium
  • #7 Herrera/Gavira, Spain
  • #16 Pedlow/Schachter, Canada
  • #8 Brouwer/Meeuwsen, Netherlands
  • #15 Fijalek/Bryl, Poland
  • #12 Doppler/Horst, Austria
  • #13 Saxton/Schalk, Canada

Teams play each other team in their pool once. The top two teams in each of the 12 pools automatically advance to the round of 32 elimination stage. The four best 3rd-place teams (as determined by the heirarchy below) also get a free pass to the round of 32. The other eight 3rd-place teams play in “lucky losers” matches, with the winners earning spots in the 32-team bracket.
