Americans Allen/Doherty, Two Others Win Tiebreaks, Pool Play Titles

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Half of the 16 men’s pool play matches on Friday were three set affairs, with three of the duos riding the tiebreak wins to the second knockout round with pool wins.

Latvia’s Martin Plavins and Edgar Tocs recorded their second straight sweep to take Pool A, besting top seeded Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands.

Poland’s Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak outlasted their foes 21-17, 23-25, 15-12 to move on with the top spot in Pool B.

Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia downed American pair Casey Patterson and Stafford Slick in straight sets to finish atop Pool C.

Brazilian duo Gustavo “Guto” Albrecht Carvalhaes/Vitor Goncalves Felipe won in straight sets to claim Pool D. 

Americans Billy Allen and Ryan Doherty notched their second straight tiebreak, overcoming a first set loss to Brazil’s Pedro Solberg and Geroge Wanderley to win 23-25, 21-16, 15-9 and top Pool E.

Pool F belongs to straight set winners Dries Koekelkoren/Tom vanWalle of Belgium, who squeaked past Canada’s Grant O’Gorman/Ben Saxton.

Poland’s Michal Bryl/Grzegorz Fijalek had to bounce back after dropping the opening set, but came through with the 15-21, 22-20, 15-13 slight win over Dutch pair Christiaan Varenhorst/Jasper Bouter to grab Pool G.

Another pair that rode a three-set victory into the second knockout round with a Pool H win was Qatar’s Ahmed Tijan/Cherif Younousse, who edged past Norway’s Anders Berntsen Mol/Christian Sandlie Sorum 21-23, 21-19, 15-13.
