Teams from seven different countries make up the men’s quarterfinal field with two American teams highlighting the field.
Top seeded Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb and qualifiers Tri Bourne/Trevor Crabb claimed their spot in the quarters with tiebreak victories in Round 2 after winning pool titles on Thursday.
Joining the Americans in the final eight are:
- #2 Christian Sorum/Anders Mol (Norway)
- #16 Ricardo Santos/Alvaro Filho (Brazil)
- #3 Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira (Spain)
- #4 Grzegorz Fijalek/Michal Bryl (Poland)
- #7 Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo (Italy)
- #9 Viacheslav Krasilnikov/Oleg Stoyanovskiy (Russia)
Five of the eight Round 2 matches went the distance. No. 19 Crabb/Bourne were the lone pair out of the five winners that dropped their opening set, rebounding for a 19-21, 23-21, 15-9 win over Germany’s Philipp Bergmann/Yannick Harms.
Crabb/Gibb topped Czech pair Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner 21-18, 12-21, 15-13. Ricardo/Alvaro Filho moved past Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen (21-15, 13-21, 15-9). Herrera/Gavira outlasted Brazil’s Pedro Solberg/Bruno Schmidt (21-17, 18-21, 15-13) and Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy ousted Brazilians Gustavo ‘Guto’ Carvalhaes/Saymon Barbosa (21-13, 17-21, 15-13).
Ricardo/Alvaro Filho and Herrera/Gavira were the only two quarterfinalists that had to play in the first knockout round. The remaining six earned a bye to Round 2 after winning their respective pool titles.
The Brazilians topped Americans Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick (21-14, 21-17), while the Spaniards bested Chileans Marco Grimalt/Esteban Grimalt in tiebreak (21-18, 19-21, 15-11).
Men’s action begins at noon ET as Fijalek/Bryl face off with Nicolai/Lupo and Crabb/Gibb meet Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy. Sorum/Mol will take on Ricardo/Alvaro Filho at 2 p.m. ET. The last quarterfinal match will pit Herrera/Gavira against Crabb/Bourne at 2 p.m. ET.
