Inside the Numbers: A Look at the #FTLMajor Statistics

The medals have been awarded and several of the teams have already moved on to the next FIVB competition in Doha, Qatar, but before we move on, let’s take a peek inside the statistics from last week’s Fort Lauderdale Major.

Tops among the women in scoring, attacking and blocking was American bronze medalist Summer Ross. Ross chalked up 158 points in seven matches with partner Brooke Sweat, notching 129 kills and 22 blocks among that tally.

“Summer was playing lights out and really helping me out on offense,” Sweat said.” I’m really proud of her, she really stepped up”.

Rounding out the women’s top three in scoring were Brazilians Fernanda Alves who scored 141 points en route to gold with partner Barbara Seixas, and Carol Horta, who notched 126 scores en route to silver with partner Taiana Lima. Fernanda downed 113 kills and Horta tallied 107.

Ross’ 22 stuffs also were tops in the competition, surpassing the 19 each by Fernanda and German Victoria Bieneck, who finished fourth with partner Isabel Schneider.

Germany’s Karla Borger was the best from the service line with 13 points followed by Bieneck’s 12 and Lima’s 11.

On the men’s side, it was American Theo Brunner who nabbed top scorer honors with 132 points over five matches alongside partner John Hyden, posting 111 kills and 18 blocks. Daniele Lupo, who earned silver with partner Paolo Nicolai, was second with 116 points, while Brazil’s Pedro Solberg notched 110 scores.

Brunner had jokes for Hyden upon seeing his name atop the leaderboard.

Lupo posted a tournament-high 112 kills, while Solberg’s partner George Wanderley downed 103 kills in his first Beach Major event.

Top blocking honors went to gold medalist Phil Dalhausser who issued 44 stuffs as he and partner Nick Lucena won six straight set matches en route to the title in their home state. Solberg (40) and Nicolai (36) rounded out the top three.

Interestingly, Lucena rounded out the top five in kills with 67, while Dalhausser was 18th with 53.

Brazilian Evandro Goncalves was the top server with 13 aces, while Canadian Sam Pedlow, Dutchman Robert Meeuwsen and Latvian Janis Smedins registered nine apiece. Dalhausser and Hyden were among a group of five players with eight aces to their credit.
