LBSU Duo, Pairing from USC/UC Irvine Cruise in Pool A Pairs Play

USAV Collegiate Beach Championships

The USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships are underway. The 12 men’s teams have been divided into three pools, A through C. Only American citizens were eligible to play in the tournament. The event is part of the Team USA Summer Champions Series and will serve as a Team USA Trials, garnering a spot to the top men’s pair for a USA Volleyball collegiate beach national team.

The top two teams out of each men’s pool will advance, the highest of the third-place finishers (according to point ratio) will advance. A play-in match between the next two third-place finishers based on point ratio will determine the final single-elimination bracket spot.

All three teams in Pool A were in action, with Sacred Heart’s Brian Ross and Bobby Costigan III playing both of its matches. The duo fell to Long Beach State’s Louis Richard and Matt Butler 21-8, 21-13 in the first match and 21-10, 21-6 to Lucas Yoder and Michael Saeta of USC and UC Irvine in the night cap of the doubleheader.

No. 1 seeded Yoder/Saeta will face No. 6 seed Richard/Butler at 1:30 p.m. ET Friday to wrap up action. Richard and Butler were a part of LBSU’s indoor team, which won the MPSF regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA semifinals. Saeta earned AVCA All-America second team honors while playing for the UC Irvine indoor squad (20-7) which advanced to the MPSF semifinals. Yoder was a second team All-American for USC after leading the nation in kills and points.

Ross/Costigan played for the Sacred Heart squad, which advanced to the EIVA semifinals and posted a 15-11 record.

Lucas Yoder / Michael Saeta (USC/UC Irvine) def. Ross/Costigan 21-10, 21-6
