The Netherlands reportedly is putting in a bid to host the 2022 Women’s World Championships as well as the Sitting Volleyball World Championships according to a report in iVolley Magazine and volleyball.nl.

The administration of the Province of Gelderland, which includes the cities of Arnhem, Apeldoorn, Ede and Nijmegen) is reportedly in support of the bid and plans to support the Dutch federation in the country’s candidacy. Rotterdam also is involved in the bid procedur as are Nevobo,  and the sports marketing agency TIG Sports.

“The Dutch women’s team has made the move to the European and world summits in recent year,” Dutch Volleyball Federation president Peter Saji said. “It would be wonderful if in 2022 for the first time in history a World Cup volleyball tournament can be played in the Netherlands.”

If the bid were accepted, it would mark the first time in tournament history that the Dutch have played host. Italy was the last European country to host the championships, in 2014. Only five European nations have acted as host since the tournament began in 1952.

The United States won the 2014 title in a four-set win over China. Russia won the previous two titles in 2006 and 2010, both hosted in Japan.

The 2018 World Championships are set for Japan, marking the fifth time the nation has hosted the event, the most of any other country. The 2018 championships are slated for Sept. 29 to Oct. 20 in six host cities: Hamamatsu, Kobe, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo and Yokohama.

The tournament features 24 teams from across the globe, which have qualified through regional tournaments: the CAVB (Africa), AVC (Asia and Oceania) NORCECA (North America), CSV (South America) and CEV (Europe).

The United States earned an automatic spot at the defending champs as does the host nation, Japan.

The four pools for the 2018 tournament were announced in December.
