When main draw action began on Friday, it marked the return of Tri Bourne, who missed the last 18 months with an autoimmune disorder.
Bourne and partner Trevor Crabb won their opening match of the tournament, topping No. 22 Chris Luers/Adam Minch (21-11, 21-15, but stumbled in Round 2 against No. 6 Jeremy Casebeer/Reid Priddy (21-16, 22-20). That pushed the duo over to the contender’s bracket, where they would face No. 14 Mark Burik/Ian Satterfield on Saturday morning.
Elsewhere in men’s action, the top three seeds and No. 5 Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick advanced in the winner’s bracket with two victories apiece.
Patterson Slick swept No. 28 James Ka/Nemanja Komar (21-11, 21-12) and edged past No. 12 Piotr Marciniak/Eric Zaun in tiebreak (21-18, 18-21, 15-10). A sweep of No. 13 Michael Brunsting/Ty Loomis (21-11, 21-16) put the duo in the final eight, setting up a meeting with No. 1 overall seed Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena.
Dalhausser/Lucena also reached the winner’s bracket final four with two sweeps and a three-set win. First up, the pair dispatched No. 32 Jacob Landel/Lev Prima (21-17, 21-13). No. 16 Maddison McKibbin/Riley McKibbin pushed the duo to the brink in a 21-9, 19-21, 15-11 victory. A 23-21, 21-15 win over No. 9 Avery Drost/John Mayer wrapped up Friday’s play for the two-time 2018 AVP champs.
In the lower half of the bracket, No. 2 Theo Brunner/John Hyden and No. 3 Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb advanced through the winner’s ranks.
Crabb/Gibb downed No. 30 Paul Araiza/David Lee (21-12, 21-13), No. 14 Burik/Satterfield (21-12, 21-19) and Casebeer/Priddy (21-18, 21-16).
Brunner/Hyden spoiled Matt Prosser‘s main draw debut after time off fighting testicular cancer with a 21-10, 21-13 win in Round 1. Next up, the pair had to battle back for a tiebreak win over Troy Field/Chase Frishman (15-21, 21-18, 15-9). Finally, it took a 21-18, 16-21, 15-11 win over No. 10 Tim Bomgren/Chaim Schalk to stay alive in the winner’s bracket.
Brunsting/Loomis, Drost/Mayer, Bomgren/Schalk and Casebeer/Priddy all had a break Saturday morning while awaiting their contender’s bracket foes.
On the women’s side, seeds 1, 2, 3 and 5 also remained in the winner’s bracket after Day 1 of the main draw.
Back after time away on the FIVB World Tour, top seeded Kelly Claes/Brittany Hochevar scored a sweep of qualifiers Jenna Belton/Chanti Holroyd (21-10, 21-16) and a tiebreak win over No. 17 Delaney Knudsen/Jessica Sykora (21-16, 19-21, 17-15) before closing out Day 1 with a 21-19, 21-9 win over No. 9 Geena Urango/Allie Wheeler (21-19, 21-9).
No. 5 Kelley Larsen/Emily Stockman pulled off three sweeps to set up a meeting with Claes/Hochevar on Saturday. The duo topped No. 28 Katey Schroeder/LeeAnn Star (21-7, 21-7), No. 21 Mackenzie Ponnet/Agnieszka Pregowska (21-13, 21-8) and No. 4 Nicole Branagh/Caitlin Ledoux (21-15, 21-12).
No. 3 seed Alix Klineman/April Ross cruised through three sweeps to reach the winner’s bracket final four. Wins over No. 30 Annika Van Gunst/Teegan Van Gunst (21-16, 21-13), No. 19 Tory Paranagua/Jace Pardon (21-15, 21-13) and No. 11 Janelle Allen/Kerri Schuh (21-17, 21-14) marked the pair’s course.
No. 2 Emily Day/Betsi Flint notched straight set wins over No. 31 Juliana Frederich/Danielle Jacobson (21-12, 21-11) and No. 18 Falyn Fonoimoana/Priscilla Piantadosi-Lima (21-18, 22-20), before nudging past No. 10 Brittany Howard/Kelley Reeves in tiebreak (21-14, 18-21, 16-14).
