2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship

Comparisons To Previous Results
Team USA, Serbia, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Australia, Cameroon, and Egypt improved on their 2014 WCH run, with Italy having the biggest jump, from 14th place to 5th place. On the negative side, Russia, France, Argentina, Finland, Iran, Cuba, Japan, and China had worse performances than in 2014, with Iran having the biggest drop, from 6th place to 16th place this time around. Poland, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Tunisia finished the competition at exactly the same spot as they did in 2014. On average, teams sported a 0.2 place performance improvement.
When comparing teams’ performance with their FIVB rankings, Poland, Serbia, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Australia, Finland, Cameroon and The Dominican Republic had better performances than their institutional rankings would have led one to believe. The Netherlands and The Dominican Republic sported the biggest jump in this category, with a 17 and 16 place improvement, respectively. On the negative side, Brazil, USA, Italy, Russia, Canada, Argentina, Iran, Cuba, Egypt, Japan, and China had worse performances than expected, with Japan and Iran sporting the biggest drops, at 8 places. Tunisia was the only country to perform at its exactly its rank. In all, teams averaged 2.13 places better than their institutional rankings.
