2017 FIVB WORLD LEAGUE – GROUP 1

The American men’s volleyball team held all of the momentum going into Saturday’s matchup with Russia in Pool H1 of the 2017 FIVB World League. They had won 3 of their last 4 games, which included a 3-0 sweep of Russia exactly a week earlier. The Russians, meanwhile, were dealing with injuries to two key performers, including a recent one to Ilia Vlasov just two days earlier, and only had 12 of the allowable 14 players active for the game.

And yet, Russia knocked off the Americans 3-2: a win that gave Russia control of their own destiny and left the Americans needing a miracle (which is actually 75% of the way there so far on Sunday) to advance.

American captain Kawika Shoji said after the game that the team “gave 100%” and communicated well.
