Two days into the FIVB Beach World Championships and things are starting to take shape in the pool play round. The women’s teams are divided into 12 pools, A through L, with a handful starting on Friday and the rest joining in the action on Saturday.

After Friday’s upset of Brazil’s Barbara/Fernanda, three underdogs claimed victories on Saturday.

Top among the upsets was a straight set win by Americans Nicole Branagh and Emily Day, who took out No. 2 seed Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider of Germany 21-16, 26-24 in Pool A action. Also picking up a surprise win were Julie Gordon and Camille Saxton of Canada, which downed No. 6 seed Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel of the Netherlands 21-19, 21-17 in Pool C.

Brazilians Elize Maia and Taiana Lima, who scored Friday’s big upset over their countrywomen, topped the No. 16 seeded Swiss team of Joana Heidrich/Anouk Verge Depre  in three sets, 26-24, 11-21, 15-10 to earn the top spot in Pool H with one match to play.

In addition to Maia/Lima, four other Brazilian women’s duos claimed victories on Day 1. Top seeded and No. 1 ranked Larissa/Talita found themselves challenged in Pool A as Austria’s Katharina Holzer and Teresa Strauss pushed them to the limit in a 21-11, 19-21, 15-8 win for the favorites.

Looking ahead to the 28 matches on Sunday, when pools D, H, I and L wrap up play, three groups will feature battles between two 2-0 sides.

Pool D, which features three German teams, will be decided as two of them, No. 31 seed Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst and No. 32 Karla Borger and Margareta Kozuch, face off. Each has already moved on to the next round.

Maia/Lima sit atop Pool H at 2-0. The duo faces the last place team in the group – Liocadia Mahhica and Vanessa Muianga of Mozambique. The Brazilian pair is guaranteed a spot in the Round of 32.

Pool I will feature a battle of the unbeaten with Brazilians Maria Antonelli and Carol Salgado taking on Americans Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. Antonelli/Carol are seeded 41st, while their foes are 42nd.

The final battle for the top spot will pit Austrian team Stefanie Schwaiger and Katharina Schutzenhofer against Czechs Michala Kolocova and Kristyna Kvapilova in Pool L. At 2-0, both are already through to the next round. The Austrians are the No. 47 overall seed, while the Czechs check in at No. 48.
