The first eliminations of the Huntington Beach Open happened late Thursday night as the main draw was cut to 32 teams on both the men’s and women’s side.
In a unique twist on the traditional FIVB main draw set-up, the Huntington Beach Open is being playing a double-elimination format.
Among those eliminated were nine American men’s duos, including Chase Budinger/Sean Rosenthal, who fell to a pair of powerhouses in Dutch No. 7 seed Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen and Brazilians Oscar/Ricardo. Budinger is a former NBA star. There are now 11 men’s teams left representing the United States.
Upcoming matchups on the men’s side include what could be an epic showdown between longtime rivals Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena (USA) and Alvaro Filho/Saymon Barbosa (Brazil). Another top pairing will pit Brazil’s Vitor Felipe/Guto Carvalhaes against Poland’s Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak.
John Mayer/Trevor Crabb will face Jacob Gibb/Taylor Crabb in the lone all-American pairing.
Eight of the 22 American women’s teams in the 48 team main draw are out, five the result of USA/USA elimination matchups.
Round 3 of women’s action is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET. The day’s slate includes four All-American matches. Among those, Summer Ross/Sara Hughes will face Emily Stockman/Kelley Larsen, and Geena Urango/Allison Daley McColloch will take on Brittany Hochevar/Kelly Claes.
Two other major battles on tap are between Americans Alix Klineman/April Ross and Brazil’s Taiana Lima/Carol Horta and Americans Brooke Sweat/Lauren Fendrick and Germans Karla Borger/Margareta Kozuch.
