At age 32, Maren Fromm is saying goodbye to the German national team after an 11-year career.

“I’m a bit emotional,” Fromm said after the team’s loss to the Dominican Republic on Thursday. “It was my last game. This farewell showed what our team is about. My heart is bleeding because I have to leave, but the team will grow without me. It will be better not to have me as a mother always around.”

Fromm (then Brinker), who married German national team member Christian Fromm in June 2017, has been with the national team since 2007.

The outside hitter was tabbed as the German Player of the Year in 2015 and 2016 and helped the team to silver medals at the European Championships in 2011 and 2013.

At the 2018 Worlds, Fromm piled up 104 points (92 kills, 7 blocks, 5 aces). That tally ranked 21st across all teams and second behind Louisa Lippman on the German side. The outside scored a match-high 25 points in the team’s Oct. 10 win over Puerto Rico and 20 in the team’s upset win over Brazil on Oct. 7.

“I’m sorry our captain is leaving,” German coach Felix Koslowski said after the team’s final match of the World Championships, a loss to the Dominican Republic, on Thursday. “However, she is making space for your younger players.”

The Germans finished 11th at World Championships with a 5-4 record (14 points). A five-set win over Brazil to open Round 2 play highlighted the team’s run. Germany finished 3-2 to place third in Pool A in the preliminary round.

Fromm’s German teammates celebrated their captain with a thank you banner at her final press conference of the tournament.
