Bulgaria and Serbia meet in the third week of World League play in Cordoba, Argentina. The two teams are in completely different situations when it comes to the standings, Serbia already qualified for the finals while Bulgaria is fighting tooth and nail to earn their spot in Brazil.
Serbia became the second team to qualify for the Final Six, along with France and hosts Mexico, who have an automatic bid in the tournament. The Serbian team took on Argentina in a tough five set match, that handed them their first loss of the World League. Marko Ivovic has led the Serbian crew consistently throughout the competition, having put down 87 total points so far in the tournament.
For Bulgaria, Tsvetan Sokolov has been the team’s go-to players, as he has 103 points in the tournament, including 86 kills, 10 blocks and seven aces. The Bulgarian crew is just coming off a three-set loss to a strong Brazilian team. Earlier in the competition, Bulgaria was able to pull off the upset over the Brazilians, but they came back with a vengeance in week three.
Serbia will make it to the Final Six in Brazil, no matter the outcome today, but Bulgaria will need a win and in three or four sets to help their chances of qualifying for the finals. Bulgaria sits back with a 3-4 record and 8 total points, while the highest team with that same record, Belgium, has 11 points.
Bulgaria vs. Serbia starts at 3:10 PM ET in the U.S. and can be seen live here:
