Six AVP Hermosa Beach Qualifiers Earn Opening Round Main Draw Wins

After Day 1 of the main draw at the AVP Hermosa Beach Open, which saw two last minute partner swaps due to injury (Casebeer/Fonoimoana and Dalhausser/Lochhead), the top four women’s seeds and the top three men’s seeds are still alive in the winner’s bracket.

No. 5 seed Ed Ratledge/Roberto Rodriguez rallied past No. 4 Trevor Crabb/John Mayer 15-21, 22-20, 15-13 to round out the men’s winner’s bracket final four.

No. 1 Theo Brunner/John Hyden, No. 2 Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb and No. 3 Billy Allen/Ryan Doherty also picked up two wins to stay alive in the winner’s bracket.

No. 6 seed Phil Dalhausser and his coach/fill-in partner Jason Lochhead went 1-1 on the day, first besting the other partner shakeup team in No. 11 Jeremy Casebeer/Eric Fonoimoana, before falling to Allen/Doherty to wrap up the day.

Casebeer/Fonoimoana started the day with a win over qualifiers Michael Boag/Bobby Jacobs, before stumbling against the two-time 2018 AVP champ and his coach.

Four of the eight qualifying duos continued their Thursday success in the opening round on Friday with Travis Mewhirter/Hagen Smith, Eric Beranek/Lucas Yoder, Spencer Sauter/David Vander Meer and Branden Clemens/Ben Vaught all scoring upsets.

The other men’s qualifiers, who were dropped into the contender’s bracket were:

In women’s play, No. 1 Sara Hughes/Summer Ross, No. 2 Kelly Claes/Brittany Hochevar, No. 3 Alix Klineman/April Ross and No. 4 Caitlin Ledoux/Geena Urango each scored two wins to receive morning respite on Saturday.

Two qualifiers posted upsets in the opening round of the main draw with Meghan Mannari/Taylor Nyquist downing No. 13 Briana Hinga/Brittany Tiegs in straight sets and No. 22 Hailey Harward/Kathryn Plummer edging past No. 11 Lara Dykstra/Sheila Shaw 18-21, 21-18, 15-9.

The remainder of the first three rounds of winner’s bracket play went according to seeding, save a Round 2 upset by No. 12 Allison McColloch/Kendra Vanzwieten, who defeated No. 5 Brittany Howard/Kelly Reeves 21-18, 21-19.

The other six women’s qualifiers had to battle it out to stay alive in the contender’s bracket throughout the day. Those six teams who advanced through qualifiers were:
