The final six teams per gender were added to the p1440 San Jose Invitational main draw on Thursday, with players ranging from 16-year old Miles Partain to 43-year old Alicia Zamparelli-Flavia.
Eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams played their way through qualifying en route to spots in the main draw of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open on Thursday.
Two of the biggest stories of the AVP Hermosa Beach Open were the last minute pairings of two of the event’s contenders due to injury with each garnering mixed results.
After the first day of main draw action, four men’s teams and four women’s are undefeated atop the winner’s bracket heading into Saturday, including No. 8 Brittany Howard/Kelly Reeves and No. 7 Tim Bomgren/Chaim Schalk.
Action began at the Seattle Open with qualifiers on Thursday and four teams of each gender moving on to Friday’s main draw. At the end of Friday, the top four men’s seeds and top three women’s remain in the winner’s bracket.
For the men, qualifying seeds 1-6 as well as the No. 25 and No. 26 teams survived to move on to Friday’s action. The top eight women’s qualifiers advanced.
The first day of the Hermosa Beach Open main draw has concluded with round 4 of play to pick up on July 22.
Much like the FIVB’s new star rating system for their tournaments, the AVP has added a new elevated beach volleyball series into their line-up called the Gold Series.
Top qualifier Ed Ratledge and Eric Zaun made it through, while No. 2 seed Aurora Davis and Bree Scarbrough led the way through the women’s qualification rounds.
