Team USA’s 2017 World League quest began with a loss to the defending champions from Serbia. The American side is full of veterans though – 5 of their 7 starters, including libero, have at least 80 senior international caps to their name – and will look to bounce back against their closest geographic rivals Canada on Saturday.
Among the biggest revelations for the Americans on Friday was that 6’4″ Long Beach State sophomore TJ DeFalco has already wedged himself into the starting lineup for the Americans, recording 7 kills on 20 swings and a block in his 14th career match for Team USA. He did also give away 12 points on errors though (5 on attacks, 3 on blocks, 4 on service).
Their day 2 opponents from Canada had a much different start to the tournament, beating Belgium 3-2 in one of the most competitive matches of the opening day. Belgium actually outscored the Canadians overall 109-108 on Friday, but Canada was gritty and pulled out their set wins by 3, 2, and 2, respectively, including a 15-13 win in the 5th tie-breaking set.
Below, watch the full match stream between Canada and the United States, whichhas just begun.
