2017 FIVB VOLLEYBALL WORLD GRAND PRIX – GROUP 1
- Group 1, Pool D1
- July 7th – August 6th
- Sendai, Japan
- FIVB World Grand Prix Round 1
- Schedule/Results
Pool D1 started the day a chaotic frenzy – all four teams at 1-1 with three points. Thailand has a chance to close out the pool with a victory while Serbia can keep their pace with the entire 12-team Group 1.
Serbia has been the top team in Group 1 thus far, winning four of five and collecting 12 points. However, their one loss came this week to Brazil and has them in third of the Pool D1 standings coming into the day. All five of the European nation’s matches have been decided in straight sets, with Brankica Mihajlovic leading Serbia in scoring at 82 points.
After a stunning three-set sweep over the defending FIVB World Grand Prix champion Brazil, Thailand leads Pool D1 off the premise of their only win in five tries in the tournament. They can really turn their event hopes around if they can complete the sweep of the team who finished behind Brazil as the runner-up in 2016 – Serbia.
Serbia won the most recent World Grand Prix encounter with Thailand in 2016, but the previous three matches all went to the Asian country. It actually represents the third most wins that Thailand has against any other opponent in their country’s history in the event.
