2017 FIVB VOLLEYBALL WORLD GRAND PRIX – GROUP 1 DAILY RECAP

  • Group 1
  • July 7th – August 6th
  • FIVB World Grand Prix Round 1
  • Schedule/Results

Day 1 of the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix is in the books. While there were some near-upsets and some exciting finishes, there were no major upsets to open the first weekend of pool play.

The most exciting finish of the day came in Kunshan, China in Pool B1, where the Americans came alive in the 4th set against Russia and stole a 3-2 victory from the jaws of defeat. It also took Japan 5 sets to beat Thailand.

The Olympic gold and silver medalists from last year, Brazil and Serbia, are both playing in Pool A1 (and will square-off on Saturday), and both took comfortable 3-0 sweeps over Belgium and Turkey, respectively.

Serbia’s 3-0 win was the most impressive of the 3-0 wins, based on points ratio, and so they’re technically on top of the table after 1 day of action. The Dutch, who swept the Dominican Republic 3-0, are 2nd, and Brazil is 3rd.

China beat Italy 3-1, but played most of the match without Rio MVP Zhu Ting. She saw only limited action in the 4th set, recording 1 kill on 1 swing.

The two highest scorers of the day both came from Japan – Sarina Koga scored 23 and Mari Horikawa scored 21 in their win over Thailand – which saw Japan take a huge number of offensive swings. Koga had 20 kills and 3 blocks. American Kelly Murphy wasn’t far behind with 19.
