USA Volleyball is about to begin their 2017 FIVB World League season in Novi Sadi, Serbia with a match against the home team. The Americans took a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, but were only 5th in last year’s World League, which broke a streak of two-straight years on the podium.

The Americans, playing in Group 1, the top tier of the tournament, will face Serbia, Canada, and Belgium this weekend before moving on to Pau, France next weekend. The team is captained by Kawika Shoji, who is working on his 133rd international cap. His brother Erik Shoji (134) and teammate David Smith (143) have even more for the Americans who bring a veteran team to the tournament, in spite of some exciting young pieces like the high-flying BYU All-American Ben Patch.
