Team of the Week: Corinthians
The world famous soccer club that has over 30 million supporters decided one year ago to try its hand at volleyball, much through the efforts of 2016 Rio Olympic Game’s MVP and team libero Sérgio Santos (Sérginho). It started its season well, moving through Brazil’s lower tier leagues until finally being promoted to Superliga. It also made the finals of São Paulo’s state championships, where it was beat by powerhouse Taubaté.
But Superliga itself is another kind of monster, where only the best of the best are allowed to play, so many wondered how Corinthians would fare. It has done wonderful so far, playing forcefully and with grit through its first 6 games, winning four of them, good enough for a respectable sixth place in the standings. This week, they made quick work of Campinas, their direct opponents in the standings, which with the loss, fell to 7th place, right behind Corinthians. Corinthians hit 65% from the field as a team, while also out-blocking its opponent 8-2 in the match.
Player of the Week: Wallace Souza
As the gold medalist Wallace turned 30 years old this season, many people wondered if the high flying outside hitter would finally start to slow down, specially after a few lackluster performances in the pre-season. However, Wallace has quickly silenced his critics throughout the season. This time around, he continued to do so with a brilliant performance that saw him hit an otherworldly 17 for 20 (85%) from the field in a 20 point performance that also saw him add 3 blocks and an ace to his stat-sheet.
