OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss kept its season going and set a record for home wins in a season (14) with a four-set victory over Arkansas State to advance to the round of eight in the NIVC. With the win, the Rebels move on to face SEC rival Georgia on Sunday.
Sophomore outside hitter Emily Stroup downed 18 kills on a .429 hitting percentage and put up six blocks to pace the Rebels. Senior outside Lexi Thompson added 12 kills, while sophomore middle Nayo Warnell chipped in 10 to go with a team-high eight blocks. Junior libero Caroline Adams pulled up 14 digs, while senior outside Kate Gibson followed with 10. Gibson also served up the team’s two aces.
Junior outside Carlisa May put down a match-high 20 kills for the Red Wolves. Freshman outside Peyton Uhlenhake followed with 12 kills on a .409 hitting effort, while freshman middle Timber Terrell notched nine kills and a team-high four blocks. Freshman libero Tatum Ticknor led the ASU backcourt with 21 digs.
The Rebels outblocked Arkansas State 13-6 and outhit the Red Wolves .294 to .201, but trailed ASU 57-56 in kills and 4-2 in aces.
After starting the match hitting .094 in the opening set, Ole Miss found its footing, hitting over .300 with just nine errors the rest of the way. Arkansas State on the other hand hit at a .323 clip in Set 2 and hit .210 or lower in the other three stanzas.

Ole Miss volleyball seniors Lexi Thompson and Kate Gibson get to play at least one more match, as the Rebels defeated Arkansas State 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21) in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship here Thursday night at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
The Rebels will host a familiar opponent in the third round, as Georgia comes to Oxford on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. The Bulldogs defeated Alabama A&M and UCF by scores of 3-0.
Sophomore Emily Stroup only had five kills through the first two sets and eight after three, but she erupted for 11 of the Rebels 17 kills in set four to finish with a team-high 18 on a .429 clip.
Arkansas State came out firing in set one, hitting .323 to Ole Miss’ .094 and won it 25-18 to grab the early momentum.
The Rebels found their groove in the second set and led 15-12 at the media timeout. They went on to win the set 25-20 behind a .333 hitting percentage and 5 kills from Thompson.
Ole Miss kept the pressure on Arkansas State, hitting .344 in set three. The Rebels raced out to a 13-1 lead and never looked back, winning it 25-16 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Arkansas State led 10-6 early in set four, before the Rebels went on a 9-5 run to tie it at 15-15. Tied at 20, the Rebels closed out the set on a 5-1 run for 25-21 and the 3-1 win. Stroup delivered four of her 11 kills in the set in the final run. The Rebels hit .389 in set four.

The Rebels will face Georgia for the third time this season, Sunday at 1 p.m. Ole Miss won the first meeting, 3-2 in Oxford on Oct. 1, and then the Bulldogs claimed a 3-0 win in Athens on Nov. 10.

The Arkansas State volleyball team saw its 2017 campaign come to a close with a 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 21-25) loss to Ole Miss in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship Thursday night at the Gillom Center in Oxford, Miss.
Ole Miss (19-14) hit .294 and held A-State (21-12) to a .201 percentage and out blocked the Red Wolves 13-6. Carlisa Mayled the team with 20 kills, her 10th match of 20 or more kills this season, to bring her season total to 507, 10th most in school history. Peyton Uhlenhake posted a season-high 12 kills, while Ellie Watkins handed out 45 assists.
Defensively, Tatum Ticknor led the Red Wolves with 21 digs to bring her season total to 596, ninth most in school history.Timber Terrell led the team with four blocks, while Jessica Uke added a pair to give her 101 for the season making her just the fourth player since 2011 to eclipse 100 blocks. Terrell was just shy of double-digit kills with nine, while Madison Brown had seven. Uke finished her career with a .336 hitting percentage, good for sixth highest in school history.
“I’m proud of our team and the effort we showed tonight,” A-State head volleyball coach David Rehr said. “We had four freshmen on the floor at a couple of points tonight and were able to battle with them so that was extremely encouraging. However, Ole Miss made a few more plays than we did, especially in the third set. I thought this was a step in the right direction though and I’m excited for next season.”
A-State jumped out to a 15-12 lead in set one at the media timeout and extended its edge to 20-13 on a block by Terrell. The Red Wolves would go on to win the first frame 25-18 on a kill by Watkins. Ole Miss raced out to a 12-6 lead in set two, but the Red Wolves battled back to within 16-14. However, the visitors couldn’t get any closer as the Rebels went on to claim the set 25-20.
Arkansas State couldn’t get much going in set three early as Ole Miss earned leads of 7-0 and 13-1 before A-State battled back within six at 18-12 on a kill by Terrell. Unfortunately the Red Wolves couldn’t get any closer as the Rebels claimed a 25-16 decision. A-State started fast in game four with a 4-0 run and led 10-6 after a kill by May. However, Ole Miss was able to tie the set at 20-20 and ended the game on a 5-1 run to win set four 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Ole Miss was led by Emily Stroup’s 18 kills, while Lexi Thompson had 12 and Nayo Warnell tallied 10 to go along with eight blocks.
Arkansas State’s win over SIUE Wednesday night was its first postseason win since the 1993 NIVC. The Red Wolves have five seniors graduating and return 12 letterwinners for next season.
