ESPN Brazil has confirmed that 2016 Olympic gold medalist/best spiker and 2017 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup MVP Ricardo Lucarelli has suffered a right-leg Achilles heel rupture during his team’s weekend game against Campinas. The injury will require surgical care.
Team doctors have stated that the possibility of him returning to play before the end of Superliga’s qualifying round is ruled out, and that even if the team goes on to the finals, the chances of him returning for it are very slim. This means that Taubaté’s title hopes now will rest solely on the shoulders of Marko Ivovic and Wallace Souza.
Although, as of now, fans are more worried about the fact that he may not return, or be in top shape, for Brazil’s run at the 2018 FIVB World Championship, to be played next September. Brazil’s hopse at a deep run in the tournament rests on Lucarelli’s recovery, as he is one of the squad’s most important players.
Social media flooded with support from his national team teammates. Here is what William Arjona had to say to him on his Instagram page:
There are moments in our careers that are totally unexpected, but for us they are only challenges that we are sure of victory, because we are winners. May your recovery be as short as possible my brother! I will always be by your side in good and bad times. May the heavenly Father bless you! A big kiss for you, and may your family strengthen you even more at this moment. I love you, count on me always.
Likewise, here are Wallace Souza and Dante Amaral‘s messages:
We will always be together my brother, you will be back soon
God is above everything, soon you will be back, giving happiness to everyone who loves volleyball!!!
